And this morning Marc talked with Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz about how much the Iraq War is really costing; go here to listen to that.

Also, a new blog post from Marc on the issue of violence in America is located here.

Enjoy.  Come visit us at our new website!

Students – Your Thoughts on School Violence?

We’re planning a series of interviews and discussions about violence in Baltimore schools beginning next week.  We’d like to invite everyone to share their thoughts and experiences on the topic, especially those involved in the school system as students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other school workers.  We’d love to hear from as many students as possible, and set up interviews with interested students, so please pass this request along to any friends or family you have attending school in Baltimore.  You can comment here, or if you’d like to reach us directly but not publicly, email justinlevy2@gmail.com.

4/11/08 Andrei Codrescu is in town

We started the morning off today with a visit from Andrei Codrescu, writer of many formats and NPR commentator.  He’s in Baltimore for a reading and talk tonight at CCBC Essex as part of their Creative Writing Forum.  Click here for all of the info on tonight’s event.  Marc and Andrei sat down and spoke for an hour or so.  We’ll be bringing you a podcast of their conversation at the beginning of next week.  Also stay tuned for the launch of the new CEM website, expected for next week, as well.  We’re working on a piece that goes behind the scenes of the new documentary Body of War which will premier on the new site.  Hope everyone has a good weekend and enjoys the spring weather!

Questions for Mayor Dixon

On April 21st, we’re going to City Hall to interview Sheila Dixon, Mayor of Baltimore.  So, send us questions that you want the Mayor to answer.  You have issues in your neighborhood, bring them up.  Questions about any policy issues, or crime or poverty?  You can send us political questions about Annapolis and the coming Presidential election.  They are all fair game.  We may not be able to take your calls, but we can take your questions.  We’ll use them to help plan our interview, which will of course be available right here as a CEM podcast.  Thanks!!

4/2 CEM wins Peabody Award!

We’re so proud and pleased and overwhelmed to announce that this morning the Center for Emerging Media was honored with a 2007 Peabody Award for the series Just Words.  Just Words was a weekly documentary feature series that gave voice to marginalized people-low wage workers, ex felons, recovering addicts, the homeless, and more.  You can listen to it here.

We share the honor this year with some of our colleagues in public radio such as Speaking of Faith, the Brian Lehrer Show, and Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!  Also honored were television programs such as The Colbert Report and the BBC/Discovery Channel series Planet Earth.  A full list of  2007 winners can be found here.  All the winners ever are listed here.

Thanks for all your support!  We couldn’t do without it.

Intern w/ CEM!

Interested in an intership with CEM?  We’re looking for someone to help us transcribe interviews.  Hours will be flexible, and you can work from home.  We’re looking for someone who will be consistently available and enthusiastic about the work we’re doing.  For more info, write to justinlevy2@gmail.com.

CAB Meeting still on as of 2:50 pm

Hi All,

I just spoke with the communications people at the Baltimore Museum of Art and they said the CAB meeting is still on.

You can call WYPR at 410-235-1660 and the BMA at 443-573-1870 for updates as the event draws closer.  If we hear that it is being canceled, we will let you know.
We know that no one likes to be out in the snow.  But we hope you will brave the elements and make it out tonight.  Your support is crucial.

02/19/08 First Day on the Job

In case you didn’t catch the news in Baltimore Business Journal or dcrtv today, thought I’d write a quick note to let everyone here know that yesterday was my last day at WYPR, and today is my first day working as a producer at the Center for Emerging Media!  I’m thrilled to be here, and looking forward to continuing working with Marc and Jessica.  The best way to contact me directly, for the time being, is justinlevy2@gmail.com.  If anyone knows who justinlevy1 is, I’d like to get in touch with him.
It’s been great to see the discussion that has exploded on the blog here the past few weeks.  Hope this will continue to grow as a place for increasingly broader discussion.
I’ve been thinking about all of these things that we would have been discussing on the air the past few weeks.  What’s been catching people’s interest lately, outside of the WYPR fiasco?  Fidel Castro plans to step down, Kosovo declares independence, the largest beef recall ever, the worst suicide bombing in Afghanistan since 2001, Obama, elections in Pakistan…
